IPOH: Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail has agreed to choose only one pension, says Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

       The Prime Minister said his wife, who had held several positions in the government, informed him of her decision on Sunday (Jan 28) morning.

       "Azizah is a former government doctor, assemblyman in Selangor and an MP.

       "She told me this morning that she would only choose one (pension)," Anwar said in his closing speech at the Perak Unity Government Convention at Casuarina@Meru Convention Centre here.

       Anwar said assemblymen or MPs who have several pensions should only choose one of them.

       He said there were representatives and former representatives who have been MPs, assemblymen and even ministers.

       "Some former ministers or prime ministers have three or four pensions from the government as assemblymen, MPs and ministers. From a moral point of view, they should choose only one," he added.

       Anwar also said potential candidates in the next general election would have to accept a pension-free scheme for elected representatives.

       "I don't agree that politicians should be excluded but as usual I will present this view when we study the abolition of the retirement scheme," he said.
