Police caught up with the dozy driver after he fled into a field in an attempt to evade armed police. He abandoned the Ford Focus but was arrested a short time later after police found documents containing his name and address inside the car.

Staffordshire Police tweeted pictures of the stranded car after chasing the driver through a boggy field in Abbey Hulton, Staffs, in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Writing on the Staffsresponse Twitter page, they said: “Firearms officers from #Shift5North have had a vehicle pursuit in Abbey Hulton.

“The driver got stuck in a field and made off. He kindly left all of his personal details inside the vehicle for us to find him.”

It ended: “Not the smartest move on his part! See you soon”

Social media users also mocked the driver following his arrest.

A spokesperson for Staffordshire Police said: "At around 12.20am on Sunday (9 January) a Ford Focus failed to stop for police on Barry Avenue in Bucknall.

"Officers followed the vehicle for a short time before it was abandoned in a field off Abbey Road in Abbey Houlton.

"The vehicle was seized and enquiries are on-going to locate the driver.

"Anyone with any information can contact 101, or report online, quoting incident number 008 of 9 January."
