PETALING JAYA: With some 14 million vehicles expected to hit the roads and highways during the long Hari Raya break starting this weekend, the police will be going for a “total enforcement” approach to keep everyone safe.

Bukit Aman Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department principal assistant director (enforcement) Supt Dr Bakri Zainal Abidin said the police would be conducting more integrated and efficient enforcement to curb road accidents and ensure smooth flowing traffic.

He told The Star they would be focusing on a total enforcement approach where the operations would also cover speed limit compliance.

“We will also be focusing on motorcycles and commercial vehicles which we have identified as the top contributors to accidents.

“We have also created emergency response teams at 14 locations on highways throughout the country,” he said, adding that these teams would also involve other enforcement and rescue agencies.

Meanwhile, Selangor Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department chief Supt Azman Shariat urged road users to be courteous.

“Road users must also ensure their vehicles are roadworthy before travelling.

“Our advice is simple, be patient on the road. Motorists should already expect traffic congestion,” he said.

City Traffic Investigation and Enforcement chief Asst Comm Sarifudin Mohd Salleh said his personnel would be carrying out patrols regularly to ensure smooth traffic flow.

“We do not have any static police checkpoints this year as we believe patrols are more effective.

“Remember to always comply with traffic regulations and if you do get stuck in congestion, be patient with each other and do not resort to cutting queue or using the emergency lane,” he said.
