All five were shot inside a residence in the 200 block of M Street SW, said Assistant Police Chief Carlos Heraud in a brief statement given near the scene.
After hearing gunshots about 4:20 p.m. officers went to the scene and found the man who had been killed and one of the men who was wounded, Heraud said. The wounded man was taken to a hospital with wounds that did not appear to be life-threatening,
Three other men who had also been shot went to hospitals by private means, Heraud said. Their wounds were also described as not life-threatening. He said police think they were shot in the M Street incident.

A sixth man who was apparently connected to the incident was found at the scene with an injury suffered in a fall, Heraud said.

All of the victims knew each other, Heraud said. But he gave no details of any connections among them.
His statement gave no information about any suspects or motive. At the time of the briefing, he said, police had “no lookout for any suspects.”
The incident occurred in a prominent location, east of the Washington Channel and between the Waterfront Metro station and the headquarters of the D.C. Police’s First District, both on M Street SW.
Nationals Park on South Capitol Street, where the Nationals played the New York Mets on Tuesday night, is about a half-mile southeast of the site where the shooting was reported.
D.C. Council member Charles Allen (D-Ward 6) whose district includes the shooting site, said he understood it was confined to a single unit of the apartment house where it occurred. In a statement, he said the city must take on gun violence “with greater urgency” at all levels of government.
After the shooting, police shut down the eastbound lanes of M Street SW between Fourth Street and Delaware Avenue, not far from the baseball park. M Street is a major commuter route in the area, and it was not clear how traffic was affected.
