A powerful earthquake has hit Australia, with shockwaves being reportedly felt several kilometres away from the epicentre.

The 4.1-magnitude tremor struck at around 4pm local time (7.30am BST) on Wednesday, in an area north-east of Jamestown, in the South Australia state.

The tremor hit at a depth of one kilometre, according to Geoscience Australia, the government's website dedicated to geoscience matters. One local reportedly said the earthquake was felt "far and wide" - reportedly as far as Adelaide, located some 200km away from the epicentre.

One local wrote on social media: "Sounded like a train going down Sixth Street, no wonder my poor old house is cracking up!"

There were no immediate reports of casualties.
