PETALING JAYA: Malaysian ports do not deal directly with Ukraine, says Transport Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong.
“Our ports do not deal directly with Ukraine. Ours are more towards the Turkish and Malta ports,” he told reporters at a press conference at the 19th Asean Ports and Shipping Exhibition And Conference in Kuala Lumpur on Tuesday (March 1).
“There is no direct dealing except if there are port-to-port commitments or activities, but this is more to other ports such as Turkey and Malta,” he added.
He said the government is monitoring the situation in the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, adding that businesses would more likely be impacted instead of ports.
However, Dr Wee said the Transport Ministry would be guided by the Foreign Affairs Ministry as well as the International Trade and Industry Ministry.
He said Malaysia would act based on the government’s policies and its international commitments.
Russia invaded Ukraine last week, with fierce fighting and bombing around the country, with many fatalities.
Ceasefire talks on Monday (Feb 287) also failed to reach a breakthrough.
