Japan Photo Journal: Fall foliage bounces off reflection pool at night in Arashiyama, Kyoto

KYOTO -- The autumn colors of a dyeing studio in the Arashiyama district of Kyoto's Ukyo Ward are lit up with fall foliage and sakura trees showing its double in the reflection pool that was installed this October. The studio is a wooden structure built 150 years ago in the Meiji era (1868-1912), that dyeing artist Yusai Okuda took over some 20 years ago. It was originally used as a restaurant inn, and is where the Nobel Prize-winning writer Yasunari Kawabata (1899-1972) is known to have written his novel, "Yama no oto" ("The Sound of the Mountain"). The idea for the reflection pool, which is 1.5 meters by 3 meters and is around 5 centimeters deep, came from the landscape that reflected off of the Katsura River nearby. The studio will be lit up until Dec. 19. For more details, visit the Arashiyama Yusaitei website (Japanese) at: https://yusai.kyoto/yusaitei/
