A French politician is gearing up to present plans to regulate low-cost airline ticket prices across the European Union.

The official said extremely cheap flights across the European continent are "no longer possible" when the planet is facing a climate crisis.

Clément Beaune, the French transport minister, argued in favour of scrapping €10 (£8.50) plane tickets and establishing minimum airfare prices across the bloc.

This move, he explained, would be in the long-term interest of the planet, as a way to reduce air travel and carbon emissions.

In an interview with French weekly magazine L’Obs, Mr Beaune said: "Plane tickets at €10, at a time of ecological transition, this is no longer possible. This does not reflect the price for the planet."

He also said: "I openly call for taxing polluting activities to invest in the ecological transition."

This isn't the first time Mr Beaune suggested ramping up taxes on plane tickets to finance investments in greener means of transport such as trains.

Speaking in August with radio station RMC, the politician said: "It allows us to finance investments in the train.

"Many people tell us that they are shocked that, often, the plane costs less than the train. We need more investments in the railway."

The increased taxes on airline tickets - as well as on companies managing France's highways - will likely be reflected in the 2024 budget to be unveiled by Emmanuel Macron's Government later this month.

Another measure to cut France's carbon footprint when it comes to air travel came into force in May, when the French Government partially banned short-haul domestic flights for trips to destinations that could be reached in less than two and a half hours by train.

The measure, however, was criticised for not being impactful enough, as it only affected three main flight routes connecting Paris-Orly Airport with Bordeaux, Lyon and Nantes.

The politician's war on extremely cheap European flights may not cause too much upset among at least one low-cost airline company.

Last summer, Ryanair chief executive Michael O'Leary said his customers were unlikely to see being offered €10 tickets in the foreseeable future due to the rise in fuel costs prompted by the conflict in Ukraine.

He told the BBC in 2022: "There's no doubt that at the lower end of the marketplace, our really cheap promotional fares - the one euro fares, the €0.99 fares, even the €9.99 fares - I think you will not see those fares for the next number of years."
