IPOH: Some 17 “black spots” or fatal accident-prone areas in the state have been identified and the police will keep a close eye on them during Ops Selamat 18, says Perak police chief Comm Datuk Mior Faridalathrash Wahid.

These areas comprise five locations in Manjung, Taiping (four), Muallim and Gerik (three each), and Hilir Perak (two).

He said the police would conduct various activities to deter accidents.

“These include mobile patrols, roadblocks, speed traps and traffic control,” he said, adding that there were also 23 accident hotspots in the state.

Ops Selamat kicked off yesterday and will run until May 8.

Speaking to reporters after launching Ops Selamat 18 at the Ipoh Selatan toll plaza yesterday, Comm Mior Faridalathrash also said the police would meet with all relevant agencies after Hari Raya to decide whether to continue with the search for two victims buried under rocks at a quarry in Simpang Pulai early last month.

He believes the “right” decision” will be made after the meeting, as the joint operation to locate the remains has been going on for almost two months.

On March 8, two men aged 43 and 49 were buried under debris after a rockfall at the quarry.

Comm Mior Faridalathrash said he understood the families’ sentiment of wanting the search to continue.

However, he said it was no longer a search and rescue operation.
