Nigel Farage predicts 10 years in power for Labour

Nigel Farage may have given away where he is planning to stand if he makes a run for Parliament at the next election as leader of Reform UK.

A poll has been taken in Clacton-on-Sea, a seat which used to be held by Conservative turned Ukip MP Douglas Carswell until 2017 to test “the Farage effect”.

And Express.co.uk understands that local political activists are pushing Reform UK to make Farage the candidate in one of the most Brexiteer seats in the country.

Clacton, currently represented by former actor turned Tory MP Giles Watling, could be ripe for the taking.

Mr Watling was a Remainer, and Clacton along with Thurrock have been discussed as possible seats for Mr Farage to run in even though Reform UK officially have a candidate there called Anthony Mack.

According to the Survation findings of 509 voters in the constituency, under the current candidates, Mr Watling would comfortably win with 38 percent of the vote to Labour’s 30 percent and Reform’s 18 percent.

This would still represent a dramatic collapse in the Tory vote which was 72.3 percent in Clacton in the 2019 election. But it would not fall enough for them to lose.

However, if Farage were the candidate, he would easily win by 10 points with 37 percent to Mr Watling’s 27 percent and Labour also down to 23 percent.

Allies of Mr Farage believe that this proves he could have a transformational effect on the general election if he makes a full comeback as Reform UK leader.

Clacton is a seat where Tory voters have deserted the party because of anger over the way Boris Johnson was ousted and the actions of the Rishi Sunak government.

When Mr Watling was reselected a number of members quit including former Tendring Council chairman Peter Harris, a former Brexit campaigner was also previously ran for Ukip in Dagenham.

Mr Harris told Express.co.uk: "Giles Watling is a Remainer still, a supporter of David Cameron coming back, and stabbed Boris [Johnson] in the back. He actually did the rounds on TV calling for Boris to resign.

"This was not missed by the Clacton Conservative Association who voted to deselect him. Forcing Giles to appeal to local members to vote for him to be selected.

"He was the only choice given to members and the association was not allowed to give an opinion.

"I absolutely know that at least 50 percent of the local Conservative association and councillors would rather support Nigel than Watling."

Millionaire businessman Arron Banks, a friend of Mr Farage’s who campaigned with him in the EU referendum with Leave.EU, believes that the former Brexit Party and Ukip leader now needs to make a comeback.

He told the Sunday Express: “Britain is broken & the vast majority of people in this country are utterly sick and tired of politics and the army of politicians running the country.

“What is needed is a fundamental reform of the entire Political and Civil service system and the recent rise of the Reform Party in the polls have shown that there is public appetite for change.”

       Trending

He went on: “It is remarkable that a party with limited brand awareness have hit 10 percent in the polls and are threatening to cause an extinction-level event for the Conservative party.

“This remarkable poll shows that the seat of Clacton might be able to change that dynamic.

“By some estimates the national support for Reform would increase to 20 percent, if Nigel returned as leader, winning votes from both parties. Sir Keir beware, working class Labour voters love Nigel. He could smash the red wall right in.

“In fact, the poll shows that the Reform vote nearly doubles with Nigel as the candidate in Clacton.

“I believe that the Reform Party should turn its fire on the business of politics and reform of the system. The message should be that we need to ‘Drain the Westminster swamp’.

“With Nigel as leader, a simple uncompromising message of Reform could be brilliantly delivered by him and ignite the dynamite under a failed two-party system.”
