London's Albert Bridge was set ablaze with a chaotic display of bright red and yellow fireworks and flares last night, in scenes that saw the explosive objects light up the crossive over the Thames

Police and fire services were called to the incident, which occurred around 11pm on Monday night. Bystanders near the iconic bridge were left baffled by the sudden burst of bright fireworks and unruly flares, unsure of what people could be celebrating.

Social media videos show flares landing on the Uber Boat, as well as nearby buildings. One eyewitness reported "flares landing all around" them, while a tree appeared to catch fire and other flares landed on a nearby church roof and parked cars, creating a potential fire hazard.

Some speculated that the bright red and yellow fireworks might be a delayed celebration by Spanish football fans following their Euros victory, with England's defeat stuck in the minds of many. Onlookers said they could hear chanting as the flares were ignited and fireworks exploded "all over the place", reports the Mirror.

It wasn't an official celebration that lit up Albert Bridge with fireworks, forcing some to dodge flares and sparks as they crossed the river. The identity of the private group responsible for setting off the flares remains unknown, as they had vacated the scene by the time officers arrived

The London Fire Brigade (LFB) has issued a stark warning to the public about the dangers of mishandling fireworks. A spokesperson for the LFB cautioned, "We encourage people to attend organised fireworks displays instead of using fireworks privately, but if you do choose to use fireworks, make sure you have enough space, buy them from a reputable, licensed seller and always look for a CE mark to make sure they're safe.

"Never drink alcohol and set off fireworks and don't throw fireworks or return to a firework once it has been lit," further emphasizing that "fireworks are explosives, and as such should be treated with respect and only used in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions and the Firework Code."

Social media users took to Twitter to report the chaos, with @noisyneil posting: "Anyone know what this was on Albert Bridge? Could hear lots of people chanting.

"One of the flares landed on the Uber Boat and seemed to keep burning for a while. Fireworks shooting all over the place and police and fire turned up minutes later. Definitely not an official thing."

Meanwhile, @coachdriverdave described a terrifying situation, "I was just about to go over to the south side when it all started, carried on towards Battersea bridge, only to have flares landing all around. One was in a tree burning, church roof had one and one landed between 2 parked cars. Dangerous!"

The Metropolitan Police has been approached for comment.
