A classroom was evacuated and four students taken to a hospital after the students reported that they felt unwell from smelling an unknown chemical or substance, the principal of McKinley Middle School said.

The fire department was called to investigate at the Northeast school, but no substance was found, Principal Kortni Stafford said in an email to parents.

The students’ symptoms “aligned with the ingestion of a controlled substance,” she said. The school system said it could not make such an assertion, because it had received no confirmation from the fire department or the hospital.

Four students were taken to a hospital for evaluation, a fire department spokesman said. He said it appeared that the smell may have been sewer gas.
