Jay Slater's cause of death has been revealed after the missing teenager's body was recovered from a remote ravine in Tenerife on Monday.

A Civil Guard spokesman said the 19-year-old's injuries included broken bones, suggesting he had a catastrophic fall.

She said: "The body of the man located yesterday has been identified of that as Jay Slater through fingerprint comparison and identification.

"The result of the preliminary autopsy points to the cause of death being a fall or plunge from height due to the broken bones he suffered."

The 19-year-old, who had been holidaying with friends on the island, disappeared on June 17 after travelling to a remote Airbnb near Masca with two men he met following a rave in Playa de las Americas.

Spanish police previously said they spoke to the two men and determined that they were "not relevant" to the case.

The 19-year-old had called friends who travelled to Tenerife with him the morning he disappeared, telling them he was "lost in the mountains, thirsty and with one per cent battery" after missing the bus.

Jay told them he was planning to walk to his holiday accommodation on the south of an island - which would have taken about 11 hours on foot.

He was reported missing shortly after when his phone died, prompting a major search by local law enforcement.

His remains were found after almost a month of searching, with local police providing positive identification of the body today.

The search in the village of Masca, near Jay's last-known location, took place in a steep rocky area, including ravines, trails and paths.

The Guardia Civil, which had been leading the operation, called off the search in late June after failing to find any compelling leads but vowed the investigation would continue.

His family has endured weeks of conspiracy theories and "awful comments" online as the search went on, but also kindness from supporters, who raised more than £50,000 to help fund the hunt for the teenager.

Volunteers also joined the teenager's family in Tenerife to help with the search.
