As many across the country bask in near 32C (89.F) sunshine, pictures have shown popular destinations such as Brighton beach packed full. Ahead of 'Freedom Day' tomorrow, Britons descended on the beach in what forecasters believe could be the hottest day of the year so far. In further pictures, sun worshippers could be seen populating the beaches in Bournemouth on Sunday afternoon.

It is thought Bournemouth could reach 30C (86F) today while other parts of the South of England may even see 33C (91.4F), the Met Office reported.

As many rush to enjoy the summer sunshine, other beaches in Weymouth, Scarborough and Cleethorpes have been rammed full of Britons.

While the hottest of the weather is expected in the south, pictures also showed happy sunseekers enjoying the sunshine in Manchester.

With Manchester recording 29C today, snaps showed happy northerners enjoying a quick dip in Salford quays to escape the searing heat.

Enjoying a more serene experience, Britons were also seen punting down the River Cam in Cambridge this afternoon.

While scorching temperatures are expected to hit a peak today, forecasters are predicting a period of extended hot weather.

Tom Morgan, meteorologist at the Met Office, pinpointed the highest temperatures today to parts of southeast Wales, Bristol and the Midlands.

He said: "Temperatures are expected to increase even further on Sunday, reaching highs of 33C in the south of the UK.

"We have got quite an extended hot spell of weather to come through the next several days lasting much of this week, nighttime temperatures will be in the high teens Celsius and daytime temperatures will be in the high twenties or low thirties.

"It's going to mean that people are really going to feel the effects of the heat as we go through this week."

A further Met Office report added: "Plenty of sunshine across most parts and turning hot, especially in the south.

"An isolated heavy shower is possible later in the afternoon.
