       A pensioner has had to put her beloved pet dog to sleep after it was attacked by two others while out for a walk.

       Norma Smith, from Lancashire, has revealed the devastation of having to put down her pet dog Cass after she was attacked by two other dogs when she was out for a walk down Cleland’s Chapel Street at the corner of Main Street, reports the Daily Record.

       The heartbroken pensioner said Cass was left in a “terrible state” and after rushing her to the vets had to put her down because of the severity of her injuries - while Ms Smith also suffered injuries herself.

       Ms Smith, 73, said: “It wasn’t far from the school so there were lots of people about. I just screamed at the top of my voice. I had about 15 people rushing to help. I felt like I was frozen. I was in a state of shock."

       Although she realised Cass’s injuries were serious, she did not expect them to be fatal, but she said: “A lady who came to help got me in her car and we took Cass to the PDSA vets in Tollcross.

       “They told me that Cass would need multiple operations and they were unsure she would make it.

       “I was heartbroken but I had to let her go.”

       Ms Smith was left with cuts on her hands which were treated at hospital, while also needing a tetanus jab, and now that the dust has settled has said she is still in shock at what happened to her beloved pooch.

       She said: “We used to take that walk every single morning and to have that taken away in a flash is heart-breaking.

       “I’m just absolutely gutted. Cass was such a lovely wee dog, she would try and lick you to death, she should still be here.

       “It wasn’t far away from St Mary’s Primary."

       A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 9.26am on Monday, August 28, police were made aware a woman had been bitten by two dogs in Main Street, Cleland.

       “Following enquiries, the dogs were seized. A 58-year-old man has been reported to the Procurator Fiscal in connection with the incident.”
