Russia’s Turn to the East: The Next Decade

On December 14, as part of the Days of the Far East in Moscow business programme, the Valdai Club will hold a session, titled “Russia’s Turn to the East: The Next Decade.” Russia’s turn to the East is an accomplished fact. Over the past years, the volume of economic and political ties between Russia and Eurasia has significantly increased, with their structure changing gradually. Russia is feeling more and more at home in Asia.

At the same time, efforts are taken to integrate Russia’s Far East with the system of economic ties and production chains of Asia-Pacific. The strategy for creation of the Greater Eurasia Community is being developed. Negotiations to prepare agreements of various scope with the leading regional players have been launched. Russia is represented at all significant economic, political and expert forums of the region.

The crucial task today is to define the new strategic priorities or Russia’s policy in Asia and Eurasia. These priorities should include, first and foremost, those consistent with the national objectives of development of Russia and its regions, primarily, the Far East. It is necessary to develop an overarching strategy of political and ideological positioning and development of the Far East domestically and internationally. The new objectives include both domestic measures implemented by the Ministry for the Development of the Russian Far East, and a package of policies to be carried out internationally, jointly with other government agencies of Russia and the Eurasian Economic Union.
