The stabbing occurred Saturday at approximately 7:45 p.m., according to police, inside the BJ’s Wholesale Club in the Landmark neighborhood. Emergency medical workers attempted to resuscitate Zemene but were unable to do so.
Fakir, who police said knew Zemene, is charged with second-degree murder. He stayed on the scene until police arrived and was taken into custody, police spokeswoman Amanda Paga said. She said police recovered a knife.
Attempts to reach relatives of Zemene and Fakir were unsuccessful.
The homicide was the first reported in the city this year. In April, a man pursued by officers from Alexandria into the District of Columbia died in police custody.
