A beach named one of the UK's best sits just a short walk from a beautiful historic village, and just two hours away from London.

Seven Sisters' white chalk cliffs provide one of the most iconic views in the UK as they reflect light across the English Channel.

They look over a similarly iconic beach dubbed one of the most beautiful in the world by TripAdvisor users, boasting a combination of chalk, shingle and sand.

While holidaymakers will treasure the chance for a beach dip or leisurely hike up the towering cliff faces, the area's true highlight is its proximity to a local historic village.

Alfriston, a village with just a few hundred permanent residents, is a short trip down the road from the stunning stretch of coastline and facilitates journeys to two tourist-laden towns - Seaford and Eastbourne.

The village is just 20 minutes away from the Sussex coast by car and is immediately recognisable.

People willing to make the short journey will spot low spires emerging from a cluster of trees dotted in one spot of the Wealden South Downs.

Entering the village, which is home to just over 700 people, travellers are greeted by narrow streets lined with Tudor homes clutching hanging baskets full of flowers.

Tourists can easily spend a day at the beach before enjoying an evening at one of the community's many cosy pubs and cafes or immersing themselves in the local gallery scene.

Travel writers placed Alfriston among the UK's 30 greatest villages, alongside other East Sussex gems.

Writing for the Daily Telegraph, Teresa Machan said that "even Disney" couldn't create the sleepy town, adding: "For a start, they’d get the scones all wrong."

Ms Machan praised the village's "historic charm", and said local tea shop Singing Kettle had "the best scones in East Sussex".

Despite being such a tiny village, it also hosts music festivals, traditional fetes and boot fares all while serving as a hub for local walkers.

Much like the nearby beaches and cliffs, Alfriston offers its own stretch of iconic scenery, as hikers can enjoy a walk down the Cuckmere River.

Summer is the perfect time to test the route, dubbed one of the "most beautiful in Sussex" which brings people down the waterway over flat ground and through the South Downs.

Other notable locations just a short walk from the town include Friston Forest, Beachy Head, Drusillas Park, and the Rathfinny vineyards.
