MOUNT Everest, which shares both the Nepal and Tibet borders, is the world's highest mountain.

Hundreds of climbers manage to conquer the mountain every year due to improved technology and knowledge, but reaching the peak remains a treacherous - and expensive - undertaking.

Climbing Mount Everest can cost anything between £24,000 and £120,000.

The price can fluctuate depending on how much serpa support you will need, which side of the mountain you climb and whether you go with a local or western guide.

Firstly everyone has to pay the Nepal government a permit fee - £8,000.

Your money will need to cover transportation from Kathmandu or Lhasa, food, base camp tents, Sherpa support, and supplemental oxygen - for you and your team.

And if you want to make it to the summit - you will need £2,000 - £5,000 worth of personal gear.

This includes a down suit, boots, sleeping bags, gloves, hats, socks, backpack and climbing gear.

Other costs are needed such as flights, yaks to carry your equipment to base camp, insurance for the Sherpa staff, and tips to kitchen staff & porters.

Why is climbing Mount Everest so expensive?

Some costs can simply not be skimped on while climbing - especially when climbing Mount Everest.

Climbers put their lives in the hands of sherpas - and must be prepared with enough oxygen, food and the right equipment to keep themselves alive.

More than 300 people have died while attempting to reach the summit - and their bodies remain on the mountain.

Many of the corpses remain hidden from view, buried beneath the snow.

But several still lie where they died along the well-trodden routes to the summit used by hundreds of climbers every year.

There they sit as a warning to others of the perils of taking on the mountain, with other adventurers even giving them nicknames.
