MELAKA: Melaka police have arrested a 26-year-old man for hitting an elderly woman following a confrontation over open waste burning at Tanjung Kling here.

       Melaka Tengah OCPD Asst Comm Christopher Patit said the suspect was detained at his home at midnight on Monday (Jan 29).

       He said an investigation paper has been opened under Section 506 of the Penal Code for criminal intimidation.

       ACP Christopher said preliminary investigation revealed that the incident occurred at 1.20pm on Sunday (Jan 28) when the 76-year-old victim met her neighbour, who operates a glamping site, to confront him over frequent open burning of waste in the area.

       He said the victim also told her neighbour that smoke from the opening burning had entered her home and caused health issues to her.

       “A verbal spat erupted between the two where the suspect, who is the grandson of the other neighbour, repeatedly slapped and punched the woman,” he said on Monday (Jan 29).

       ACP Christopher said the victim fell as a result of the blows and sustained injuries, adding that the suspect also threatened to hit her with a blunt object while she was prone.

       The incident was also caught on closed-circuit television (CCTV) and posted on social media.

       The victim’s grandson lodged a police report on the same day.
