Princess Elisabeth complains about having to get up too early at military school

The future Queen of Belgium spoke of the experiences she has made over the past few months at the RMA as her first year there is drawing to an end. Conceding she had to get used to the military environment and intense schedule, she said: "I am used to getting up so early.

"I had to adapt a lot here, but I enjoyed it immensely.

"I have met fantastic people, gained many new experiences.

"I hope to see you again on July 21 [Belgian National Day].”

At the academy, Princess Elisabeth, Duchess of Brabant, is attending a course in social and military sciences, where she is learning among other things about the four components of Belgian defence: Army, Air Force, Navy and Medical.

Crown Princess Elisabeth, the eldest daughter of King Philippe and Queen Mathilde, was photographed today in her camouflage cadet uniform while carrying out tactical drills.

The cadets were at Camp Lagland in Arlon, where they are carrying out the last training phase of their first year as students.

There, they were seen marching in formation and standing to attention.

The students, including Elisabeth, also showed off their skills during a training military exercise, which included running through an obstacle course.

In other snaps, the future Queen was seen having breakfast with her fellow cadets, with whom she appears to have bonded.

Evelyn Gravez, a 22-year-old who has almost completed her master's degree in social and military sciences at the academy, opened up on the challenges the future Queen may be experiencing.

She told local media: "My advice? Above all, make as many friends as possible.

"They'll help you through if you're having a hard time."

Ms Gravez described the experience at the RMA as "pretty tough", explaining teachers "sometimes have to be strict" - but are also supportive and don't "bark at you".

Speaking about Princess Elisabeth, the student added: "I think Elisabeth will certainly get used to it. Even if she only stays one year.

"We learn to make decisions under stress, leadership techniques.

"That will be useful for her as head of state."

Princess Elisabeth is following King Philippe's footsteps, as he attended the academy for three years in his late teenage years.

It has not been confirmed by the royal palace how long the future Queen will attend the RMA, which she joined in September.

Last summer, the Belgian royal spent 18 months at the boarding school UWC Atlantic College in South Wales - but was forced to cut her attendance short in March, when she returned to Belgium due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Princess Elisabeth is set to become the first female sovereign in the history of Belgium after the change in the act of succession made a decade prior to her birth.

Following this new act, Belgium introduced absolute primogeniture, which means the firstborn of the sovereign will become the next monarch no matter their sex.
