The future monarch is currently studying at the University of Oxford on a three-year degree in history and politics. Elisabeth, who is the eldest daughter of King Philippe and Queen Mathilde, attends the University of Oxford’s Lincoln College.

       Writing in a statement on the Royal Family's Instagram page last month, the family announced Elisabeth will “regularly return to Belgium and remain involved in Belgian public life” whilst she continues to study in the UK.

       On the royal's 20th birthday a photograph which was taken on September 27 at the University by Bas Bogaerts was released to social media.

       The photo was shared on the Royal Family’s Instagram account with the caption: “'Princess Elisabeth turns 20 today.

       “Thank you for your birthday wishes.”

       Royal fans flooded the comment section with congratulations.

       Following on from the photo on the Belgian Royal Palace's official Instagram account, user ramiarto commented: "Happy birthday, Your Highness!"

       User alhelimi commented: "Happy birthday to our wonderful and pretty princess of hearts Elizabeth."

       Vanhecksylvie added: "Sincere congratulations to our versatile, multilingual and spontaneous princess. A pride for her parents.

       The Princess had previously completed her secondary education at UWC Atlantic College in South Wales.

       However, the Princess chose her course at Oxford herself with her parents' approval.

       She also received advice from alumni from various universities to help make her decision.

       Her father, King Philippe, also studied abroad and earned a degree in Political Science from Stanford University in California.

       Last summer, the Belgian royal spent 18 months at the boarding school UWC Atlantic College in South Wales - but was forced to cut her attendance short in March, when she returned to Belgium due to the coronavirus pandemic.
