A former Glen Ellyn man was sentenced Tuesday to 50 years for the murder and sexual assault of his ex-wife, according to a news release from DuPage County.
Juan Granados, 43, was found guilty of one count of first-degree murder and one count of criminal sexual assault of his former spouse, Nancy Bustos.
During his trial in 2020, Granados admitted to “grabbing Nancy Bustos around the neck” in their apartment while their 4-year-old son was just steps away. Granados also testified that he remembered taking Bustos’ body to the bathtub and trying to revive her by turning on the water.
Judge Brian Telander sentenced Granados to 40 years for the murder of Bustos and 10 years for the sexual assault. Both sentences will be served consecutively, the news release stated.
On Oct. 16, 2011, Glen Ellyn police found Bustos dead in the bathroom of the apartment where she and Granados were living, during a well-being check. She was 36.
The evening prior, an investigation showed there was a scuffle between Granados and Bustos.
Granados and Bustos were married for 10 years and had two children.
According to court files, Bustos sought an order of protection in 2004 from Granados for battery and threatening to take their daughter away to Mexico.
In 2010, the pair divorced but continued living together in the apartment.
A year later, Bustos was trying to move out after she started dating someone new.
An investigation by the police found that Granados took his son, who is developmentally disabled and blind, to his grandmother’s house in Hanover Park. Their other child was with Bustos’ family.
He then drove to Mexico and lived there for six years. While there, Granados remarried. In fall 2017, he was extradited. Telander ordered him held without bail at the DuPage County Jail, where he stayed until his sentencing.
Granados must serve 100% of his murder sentence and 85% of the sexual assault sentence before being eligible for parole. His time in DuPage County Jail will be credited.
