AN entrepreneur who had to forgo his childhood ambition of becoming a teacher due to mental health issues now earns about RM4,000 a month through an online clothing business, Kosmo! reported.
Mohd Hafiz Almuhaimi Mohd, 31, was diagnosed with bipolar disorder when he was 17.
He underwent psychiatric treatment at Hospital Sultanah Nur Zahirah in Kuala Terengganu and Hospital Permai in Tampoi, Johor.
“I managed to control my illness after the treatments and obtained good results with 7As for my SPM,” he said.
However, in 2015, the disorder returned, causing the Education Services Commission to disqualify him from being a teacher.
The decision upset him greatly because it meant he had failed to follow in the footsteps of his father who was also an educator.
“At that time, I often heard whispers and my emotion was unstable. Sometimes, I would talk a lot, was easily depressed, overly excited and lost focus.
“But thanks to my family and close friends who supported me throughout, I managed to bounce back by starting a business selling clothes about four years ago,” he added.
Before the Covid-19 pandemic, Mohd Hafiz said he was able to earn RM10,000 a month from the clothing business before it had to be temporarily closed due to the movement control order.
