A South Austin man was charged with first-degree murder Thursday in connection with the 2020 killing of a 17-year-old in the West Garfield Park neighborhood on the West Side, according to police.
Eugene Burns, 19, was arrested Thursday by Chicago police and the Great Lakes Regional Fugitive Task Force at O’Hare International Airport.
In September 2020, the 17-year-old boy was outside with a group of people in the 4400 block of West Jackson Boulevard when a man fired shots from a black Nissan Altima, striking the teen in the neck and chest. He was pronounced dead at Stroger Hospital, according to police.
Burns was also charged with home invasion in connection with a March robbery in the South Austin neighborhood.
Police said in that incident, multiple people broke into a house in the 5200 block of West Van Buren Street and beat a 57-year-old woman, a 60-year-old man and a 63-year-old man. Burns is also charged with aggravated animal cruelty for allegedly shooting the victim’s dog.
Burns is expected in bond court Thursday.
