Thousands of farmers have descended on supermarkets to engage with the public about the impact of Rachel Reeves’s inheritance tax raid.
Morrisons and Asda have backed the sector by demanding that the government pause its planned agricultural property relief (APR) changes which risks decimating the sector.

A spokesman for Asda on Friday said: “We have been raising our concerns with Government and will be supporting the National Farmers’ Union’s (NFU) campaign calling for a pause in the implementation of APR to allow for proper consultation.”
Farmers parked their tractors outside retailers across the country where they spoke with Britons after handing store managers a letter insisting that they were peacefully protesting.
This is the latest demonstration by the sector which has previously taken to the streets of London to voice its anger at the Chancellor.

One letter sent to a store manager said: “As local farmers, we are writing to express our gratitude for the support the public has shown us during these challenging times.
“We will be visiting your supermarket with our tractors to engage with the community and highlight the importance of supporting British farming.

“We are particularly encouraged by Morrison’s recent declaration of support for British agriculture, we believe it sets a positive example for the industry. We kindly ask if your supermarket would consider backing this initiative as well.
“By doing so, you would not only show solidarity with local farmers but also help to raise awareness about the value of sourcing home grown British produce and the work that goes into the food we grow here in the UK.
“Our aim is to foster a greater connection between farmers and consumers and we believe your support can make a significant impact. We look forward to discussing this further during our visit and hope to work together to promote British agriculture.”
The NFU will continue the action with a "day of unity" next Saturday.

Ms Reeves placed a 20% inheritance tax on farmers’ assets worth more than ￡1 million in her October Budget from April next year.
Tax breaks previously designed to allow family farms to pass down the generations were exempt from the 40% duty.

The Daily Express’s Save Britain’s Family Farm crusade has demanded a U-turn.
Ministers have insisted their action will only affect the wealthiest quarter of landowners.
But the National Farmers' Union (NFU) and others say the impact of Ms Reeves's measures will be much more widespread.
