Voters in Blyth, North East England, which turned Conservative for the first time ever at the 2019 General Election, expressed mixed feelings towards allegations that a Christmas party took place in Downing Street on December 18 last year.

One lady told Sky News: “It should not have happened!

“If we were in lockdown then everyone else should have been in lockdown. I totally disagree with everything.”

She later told the programme that she had voted Conservative in 2019, but stressed: “I wish I hadn’t."

The Blyth local added that the Downing Street Christmas party has triggered such disappointment in her that she would not vote for the Tories at the next election.

Discussing the alleged bash, one gentleman hammered: “They’re telling us one thing and doing the opposite.

“It is one rule for them and one rule for us!”

Another man explained that the frustration came due to the difference between the sacrifices made by Britons to follow Covid measures up and down the country compared to those in power who disobeyed them.

He said: “Those people who were told they could not see their relatives, eventually they died without seeing them.

“I think that is where the story really goes to.”

But one resident offered a different take, chiming: “To be quite honest I think there are more important things for people to be more worried about.

“It is something that happened last year, I think they should be focusing on this year.”

Prime Minister Boris Johnson has called on Cabinet Secretary Simon Case to investigate the party, which took place during Tier 3 restrictions in London and was originally reported by the Mirror newspaper last week.

But the saga took a new turn after footage obtained by ITV showed the Prime Minister's former spokeswoman Allegra Stratton laughing about the party during a mock press conference four days later.

Responding to a mock question by advisor Ed Oldfield whether a party took place, Ms Stratton laughed, saying "this fictional party was a business meeting and it was not socially distanced".
