West Yorkshire Police were called to Shaw Lane, in Huddersfield, at around 10.39am today after it was believed a grenade was found on the towpath. Several houses and businesses were evacuated while experts were called in.

A spokesperson for West Yorkshire Police said: "At 10.39am today (Thursday), police were called about what was believed to be a grenade which had been found on the towpath, close to Shaw Lane in Milnsbridge.

"A cordon was put in place for people’s safety and a small number of residents and businesses were requested to temporarily evacuate.

"Shaw Lane was also closed off for a short time.

"A controlled explosion has since been carried out and the cordon removed to allow people to return."

Multiple police officers were called to the scene as well as the Explosive Ordnance Disposal.

Experts have conducted a controlled explosion so people could return to their homes and businesses.

The cordon of New Street has since been lifted.

Back in May, the army bomb squad searched a secluded house near Marsden, in West Yorkshire, after suspicious items were found.

Police confirmed that rumours of an unexploded World War 2 bomb was untrue but did not confirm what the suspicious items were.

A spokesperson for West Yorkshire Police said: "Police are attending a property on Manchester Road, Marsden as part of an ongoing investigation.

"A cordon has been placed around the property and as a precaution, the Explosives Ordnance Disposal team (EOD) were requested after police found potentially suspicious items inside.

"Road closures are in place and local bus companies have been made aware of diversions while the EOD assessment is carried out."

In February last year, Primrose Hill Road in Huddersfield was blocked off.

Police said they believed the items found during a search of the property were fireworks.

Several streets in Primrose Hill including Armitage Street, Cross Lane and Primrose Hill Road were blocked off by police.

A force spokesman said the items were found in a house search after police were called to a domestic incident and a 28-year-old man was arrested.
