TOKYO -- The Tokyo Metropolitan Government reported 342 coronavirus infections in Japan's capital on July 5.
The new cases came after Tokyo recorded 518 infections on July 4. Reported case numbers typically dip on Mondays due to low testing figures over the weekend, especially on Sundays. The capital is under quasi-emergency measures to prevent the spread of coronavirus infections.
In June, Tokyo recorded a total of 12,979 new coronavirus cases, or an average of 432.6 cases per day, down from the daily average of 705.8 in May. Tokyo saw a monthly high of 39,664 new virus cases in January -- an average of 1,279.5 infections per day, and the highest single-month total since the pandemic began in spring 2020.
By July 4, a total of 2,239 people had died of COVID-19 in Tokyo.
Tokyo has recorded 176,843 infections to date, the most of any of Japan's 47 prefectures. As of July 4, there were 1,640 COVID-19 patients in hospital, 51 with severe symptoms.
