Colonel Richard Kemp, former Military Commander in Afghanistan, has warned that intelligence groups are particularly cautious around 9/11. He believed “jihadists everywhere are energised” by the Taliban’s takeover of Afghanistan.
“On the other hand, they will also be looking to, to get some funds from them to use them as hostages in some cases.”
The host then asked: “Let's talk about this, you know, increased terror attack.
“We're coming up to the anniversary of 9/11, which is always on our minds but more so this year, surely.”
Mr Kemp replied: “Yeah. I think the period around 911 is always the time when the authorities are particularly cautious.
He continued: “And I think that'll be the major concern rather than new terrorism coming out of Afghanistan.
“Right now is really too soon after the Taliban victory to see that thankfully, but we will certainly see, I think that the higher likelihood of an attempt to act even if they don't succeed than we would have seen before the Taliban victory.”
The Taliban has announced an all-male caretaker government.
The US has expressed concern that the interim government includes figures linked to attacks on US forces.
