KUALA LUMPUR: Sultan of Perak Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah, the chancellor of Universiti Malaya (UM), has announced the re-appointment of Toh Puan Dr Aishah Ong as the university’s pro-chancellor at the university’s 60th convocation opening ceremony.
Dr Aishah, who was earlier appointed UM pro-chancellor from February 2003 to 2008, was the first woman to be appointed to the post.
UM also conferred the emeritus professor title to academician and economist Prof Dr Jomo Kwame Sundaram in appreciation of his contribution to education, at home and abroad, during the first session of the convocation ceremony yesterday, Bernama reported.
The convocation ceremony conducted in the new norm will be held over 13 sessions until Nov 27.
This year’s convocation will see 5,276 graduands receiving their scrolls with 467 set to receive their doctoral degree, 1,581 for their master’s degree and 3,228 for their bachelor’s degree.
Among the graduands who will be receiving the Doctor of Philosophy award is Lim Tien Hong from the Economics and Administration Faculty, who is visually impaired.
Also celebrating their success in attaining their doctoral degree from the Arts and Social Sciences Faculty are Mior Roslan Mior Mohd Jaafar, 66, and N. Damalingam, 60.
