The Unicode Consortium has confirmed 37 new emojis will be available on smartphone keyboards in the next update. Emoji 14.0 will be rolled out later this year and will include a pregnant man, a gender neutral pregnant person, multiracial handshakes, a melting face, beans and a biting lip.
The pregnant man and pregnant person emojis have been in the works since July and have sparked a very mixed reaction.
One Twitter user said: “I could probably count on one hand the number of people who asked for a pregnant man emoji.”
However, many criticised the confusion with one saying: “The discourse over the pregnant man emoji is hilarious. A bunch of adult toddlers crying over something that doesn’t affect them at all and probably never will.”

Another user praised the emoji saying it is “mainstream recognition that it is not just women that get pregnant”.
And a third was delighted there was finally an emoji to use when one has eaten too much. He said: “Finally, I can use the pregnant man emoji for when I am super full and bloated.”
Another echoed: “This is a ‘pregnant man’ emoji... But you know I'm going to be using it as a ‘just ate massive burrito’ emoji.”
