'Rees-Mogg should go!' Labour demand resignation as Westminster sleaze crisis deepens

Labour has demanded Jacob Rees-Mogg's immediate resignation as the Conservative's sleaze crisis deepens. Shadow Leader of the Commons Thangam Debbonaire told Sky News' Trevor Phillips that Mr Rees-Mogg’s position was "untenable" and the Government’s reputation is “shredded". She also said that Prime Minister Boris Johnson should "consider his position".

Trevor Phillips said: "Let me be just blunt, are you saying Jacob Rees-Mogg should resign or not?"

Ms Debbonaire responded: "It's an extraordinary thing for the leader of the house to have so little control. If I was him, I would be considering my position."

Mr Phillips followed up: "So he should go?"

Ms Debbonaire said: "His position is untenable."

She also repeats her party's line that Owen Paterson should be ruled out of being recommended for a peerage.

She hit out at Environment Secretary George Eustice, who complained that the media and opposition parties had "conflated" Mr Paterson's situation with an amendment to reform the appeals process.

Ms Debbonaire rebuked this: "It was literally the government that conflated the two.

"This is Tory sleaze, plain and simple."

This comes amid mounting pressure on the Prime Minister, as new opinion polls show his personal approval figures hitting their lowest-ever level.

A new Opinium poll for the Observer shows ratings for Johnson and his party have slumped dramatically since last weekend due to the Owen Paterson scandal.

The botched attempt to scrap Westminster’s standards system saw Mr Johnson's personal ratings fall to -20, down from -16 last week.

For who voters see as the best prime minister, Mr Johnson saw an 11-point lead plunge to just 2 points.

Despite the ongoing furore, Mr Eustice told Sky News that he doesn't agree with "sleaze" accusations against his party.

He described the controversy as a "Westminster storm in a teacup".

However, on Saturday, former Tory prime minister Sir John Major described the Government's actions as “shameful”.
