KOTA KINABALU: Floods hit the districts of Beaufort and Sipitang since early Thursday (Sept 2) following a downpour from the day before but no evacuations have been conducted as of 3pm.
While rising water levels have caused some roads in Beaufort and sub-district Membakut to be inaccessible, no families had yet been placed at the Dewan DSP Mohd Dun Banir relief centre which had been activated, said Beaufort district officer Abdul Imam Basirun.
"There were five families from Kampung Suasa, Lumadan which were rescued and placed at the village community hall there, but none at the main relief centre.
"Right now the weather is cloudy, but we anticipate the water level to continue rising so all relevant agencies are on standby," he said when contacted.
Meanwhile in Sipitang, two families of nine and five respectively from Kg Masjid Pantai, had been rescued after their homes became flooded.
Sipitang Fire Station chief Janil Jaya said they received the distressed call at 6.15am and a team of rescuers were sent to the area.
"The families went to stay with their respective relatives, but now the water is receding, so we expect they might return home later this evening," he added.
Sabah’s west coast and interior divisions had been experiencing heavy rains almost every evening since last week, but no major flooding had been recorded to date.
