MELAKA: The book symbol seems to be the most sought-after logo among the 22 independent candidates contesting in the Melaka state election.
Ten of them have chosen the book as their election symbols, while five have selected the key and three chose the tree.
The other four candidates opted for the rabbit, tractor, tie and pen symbols respectively.
For independent candidates, their choice of symbols is important as they need to get voters to remember the logo that represents each of them on polling day.
Notable independent candidate Datuk Norhizam Hassan Baktee, who is defending the Pengkalan Batu seat, has chosen the key symbol.Gan Tian Soh, who is contesting for the Duyong seat, is using the rabbit symbol while Azmi Kamis is contesting for Bemban with the tractor symbol and Mohd Akhir Ayob, who is contesting in Asahan, is using the book symbol.
“I chose the book as my symbol because it is the best reference and those who read books are clever people,” said Mohd Akhir.
Two other independent candidates who are also eyeing the Asahan seat – Mohd Noor Salleh and Azmar Abdul Hamid – are using the tree and key symbols respectively.According to the Election Commission’s (EC) official portal, there are 28 symbols that candidates can choose from for their campaign purposes and as their symbols on the ballot paper. The other symbols include the elephant, prawn, hoe, boat and motorcycle. After choosing the symbols and having their choices confirmed by the returning officer on nomination day, candidates are not allowed to change their symbols.
But if more than one independent candidate contesting for the seat vies for the same symbol, the EC will hold a ballot to determine who earns the right to use the symbol.
