Dozens of people have reportedly been injured after two trains collided in a tunnel between Andover and Salisbury.
It is understood that the 1708 Portsmouth Harbour to Bristol Temple Meads train, a Great Western service, hit an object as it came out of a tunnel near Salisbury station and the rear carriage derailed.
It is believed a South Western Railway service from London Waterloo to Honiton collided with the rear of the derailed train.
Wiltshire Police said the incident happened close to London Road in Salisbury.
The force tweeted: "We are currently at the scene of a train crash involving two trains between Andover and Salisbury.
"We are responding with the fire and ambulance service at the site close to London Road, Salisbury. Will update as soon as we have more information."
Sources told the PA news agency up to a dozen passengers are believed to have been injured in the incident, describing them as "walking wounded".
British Transport Police said: "We are currently responding to an incident at Fisherton Tunnel, Salisbury.
"Officers were called at 6.46pm this evening following reports a train derailed.
"We are on scene alongside paramedics and the fire brigade."
50 firefighters are at the scene of the collision, Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service has said.
It said it is working with Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service, Wilshire Police, South Western Fire and Rescue Service and Network Rail.
On the service's Twitter page, a spokesman said: "We are currently at the scene of a train crash near London Rd, Salisbury. Approx 50 firefighters from both @DWFireRescue [Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service] & @HantsIOW-fire [Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service] at this major incident. Will update as we have more information."
