Tory MP Andrew Rosindell has been cleared by the Metropolitan Police, who have spent nearly two years investigating an allegation into the Greater London politician.

Mr Rosindell's spokesman has announced that the Met conducted "a thorough investigation and concluded that there was no case to answer and that no further action would be taken".

"Andrew has been completely exonerated. He has been working constantly for Romford throughout the past twenty-one months and will continue to speak up for the people of his beloved home town as their local MP."

The news of the police investigation was announced in May 2022, but Mr Rosindell was not officially named until July 2023 when the Sunday Times broke the story.

As a result of his agreement to stay away from the Commons throughout the Met probe, Mr Rosindell has been unable to speak in the Chamber or vote for nearly two years.

However he has continued working on local issues.

Despite the then-ongoing investigation, Mr Rosindell was reselected by his Romford constituency association in March last year with a unanimous vote.

A lifelong Brexiteer, Mr Rosindell said he was “humbled and honoured to have been reselected”.

The Met Police has also backed up Mr Rosindell's spokesman, revealing the case has been dropped.

A spokesman said "A man, aged in his 50s, was arrested in May 2022 on suspicion of indecent assault, sexual assault, rape, abuse of position of trust and misconduct in public office".

"A thorough investigation has been carried out by detectives. They concluded that the evidence did not meet the threshold set by Crown Prosecutors.

"The man has been informed he will face no further action."

Responding to the news, Conservative MP Lord Moylan has demanded to know why the probe took so much time.

He voiced "delight" for Mr Rosindell, but described the near-two year investigation as a "real scandal" and asked why the Met Police is not being "held to account for needing 21 months to investigate this".

"Police inquiries are now lasting unwarrantedly longer times and the agony for those accused but not charged is unjust."
