Former Conservative Party leader Iain Duncan Smith has provided the England football team with an inspiring pep talk ahead of the team's Euros clash with Germany tonight. Discussing the upcoming game with TalkRADIO host Julia Hartley-Brewer he said that England players needed to learn from France's shock defeat to Switzerland on Monday evening. Mr Duncan Smith said England needed to realise "the team matters more than you."

       Mr Duncan Smith told Julia Hartley-Brewer: "This is the worst of all games that we could possibly have.

       "Because the honest truth is that England has come up short against Germany time after time.

       "And the lesson we learnt last night by the way in that phenomenal Swiss France game is that it doesn't matter how smart, fancy and good your individuals are in the team.

       "If you don't play as a team you lose."

       He added: "And France arrogantly strutting on the pitch found themselves up against a Swiss team probably no one can remember many of their players.

       "But they played their hearts out for their country as a team.

       "If that is one lesson I would like to say to England - the team matters more than you.

       "Play for the team and you'll beat Germany."

       England's crunch Euro 2020 game versus Germany kicks off at 5pm tonight

       Ahead of the match, Geman newspaper Bild has reworded the English national anthem to include mocking references to painful past performances.

       References include lyrics recalling Gareth Southgate and Stuart Pearce's missed penalties in 1996 and 1990.

       The newspaper also removed the Queen from the anthem replacing her majesty with German goalie Manuel Neuer.

       The new anthem reads: "Long live our Goalie-King, Neuer save penalties!

       "Be our hero who holds all the shots. Send her home with tears.

       "Neuer save penalties! Oh, our king in the goal. Kane’s knees are trembling in front of it."

       The paper adds: "Neuer save us all! We think of Waddle and Pearce, Southgate and its bitter tears."
