The Duke of Cambridge was accompanied at Wembley by the Duchess of Cambridge and their seven-year-old son Prince George. The young royal looked thrilled as he watched England score in the first two minutes.

William and Kate clapped after Luke Shaw scored for England after just two minutes while George beamed with delight after the goal.

The cheers and screams at England's first goal, the first goal of the final, could be heard echoing through Oxford Circus as the exciting atmosphere built up in central London.

Some people are watching the game on their phones in the street, and the singing of the Three Lions anthem can be heard up and down Oxford Street.

England's early goal prompted bedlam at a street party for the match in Ashton-in-Makerfield, near Wigan.

Young and old had only just settled down in front of a back garden big screen after singing along to a PA system on the pavement belting out, Football's Coming Home and Vindaloo before neighbours stood for the national anthem.

Mother-of-two Camilla Thomas, 38, said: "What a fantastic start to the game for us! It's a game changer.

"It just makes you more nervous getting the early lead because you are scared the Italians will real go for it to equalise."

Jacqui Stanley, 58, from Liverpool, said: "I don't follow football really but that was a screamer!"

England fans exploded in Trafalgar Square after the first goal was scored.

Supporters were sent into raptures and began singing Football's Coming Home.

Fireworks were set off by fans outside the landmark.

James Caldon, 34, from Plumstead, south London, said: "Wow, what a start, we needed that.

It is a big weekend of sport for the couple and William, as president of the Football Association, has spoken of how "exciting" it is for the England team to reach the final.

England football captain Harry Kane revealed this weekend that Cruise called the team to wish them well in their historic match.

However, he said he did not know if the Top Gun actor would be at Wembley.

However, Italy ended the Three Lions' bid for glory with a 3-2 victory on penalties in the nation's capital.

William urged the players to "hold your heads high".

In a tweet from the KensingtonRoyal account, signed W, William congratulated the Italian football team on their win.

He wrote: "Heartbreaking. Congratulations Azzurri on a great victory. England, you've all come so far, but sadly this time it wasn't our day. You can all hold your heads high, and be so proud of yourselves - I know there's more to come."
