God Save The Queen words - full lyrics of England national anthem

England played Italy in its first-ever Euros final yesterday, with Gareth Southgate's legendary team making history at Wemberly. The historic game debuted at home, and saw fans flock to London, bringing chaos and boisterous cheer in their wake. Players and fans alike sang the national anthem, God Save the Queen, before England attempted to take the trophy at home.

England doesn't have its own national anthem as it uses the UK's God Save the Queen.

Writers have created several iterations of the anthem over time, starting with the original one-verse version in the 18th century.

There is also no definitive version of the song, although there is a "standard" consisting of three verses.

       God save our gracious Queen!

       Long live our noble Queen!

       God save the Queen!

       Send her victorious,

       Happy and glorious,

       Long to reign over us:

       God save the Queen!

       O Lord our God arise,

       Scatter her enemies,

       And make them fall:

       Confound their politics,

       Frustrate their knavish tricks,

On Thee our hopes we fix:

       God save us all.

       Thy choicest gifts in store,

       On her be pleased to pour;

       Long may she reign:

       May she defend our laws,

       And ever give us cause,

To sing with heart and voice,

       God save the Queen!

God Save the Queen also applies to sports teams from the home nations, including Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Scotland has local versions too, such as 'Flower of Scotland' or 'Scotland the Brave'.

Wales has an official anthem of its own, titled "Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau".

Discounting the so far unofficial 'Three Lions' by David Baddiel, Dennis Skinner and the Lightning Seeds, England doesn't have an official anthem of its own.

But like Scotland, it has a few potential candidates to use in God Save the Queen's place.

MPs have opened the debate several times in the past, between 2007 and 2016.

Conservative, Liberal Democrat and Labour MPs have all called for or proposed new anthems during this time.

Viable candidates for the position include 'Jerusalem', 'I Vow to Thee, My Country', and 'Land of Hope and Glory'.

Some of these alternatives have featured at sporting events with England teams in the past.

Jerusalem is a sung version of William Blake's poem of the same name, which organisations and parties in the UK have used as their own anthem in the past.

People often hear Land of Hope and Glory ringing out at the end of Last Night of the BBC Proms.

The song also featured as an anthem for the English national rugby team until 2005.
