Western Isles MP Angus MacNeil was charged by police with dangerous driving in connection with an incident on the Hebridean island of Barra in October 2020. It is alleged the Nationalist MP caused serious injury to a motorcyclist then aged 17 on October 30 in Castlebay.

It follows a two-vehicle crash between Mr MacNeil's Toyota RAV4 and the motorcycle at 7pm.

The MP is accused of failing to "keep a proper lookout while performing a manoeuvre" on the A888 at Castlebay.

Police Scotland said the teenager and the Nat MP were driving near Castlebay Community School on the Outer Hebridean island when the two vehicles crashed.

The teenage boy motorcyclist was taken to hospital with a leg injury.

In an initial hearing at Lochmaddy Sheriff Court on North Uist on Tuesday, Mr MacNeil was not present.

However, he pleaded not guilty by letter.

Mr MacNeil is expected to appear in person in court for an interim hearing in September ahead of a trial in October.

Separately, Mr MacNeil has been involved in several other affairs unrelated to the crash.

In May 2016, it was revealed Mr MacNeil and former SNP MP Stewart Hosie had been involved in a love triangle with Oxford-educated journalist Serena Cowdy.

Shortly afterwards, it was announced that Mr MacNeil and his wife, Jane, with whom he lived on Barra, had separated.

Mr MacNeil also brought shame to the SNP in 2007 when he was caught with girls aged 17 and 18 in a hotel room when his pregnant wife was in hospital.

He expressed bitter regret and apologised for causing “embarrassment and hurt.”
