Hitting back at French sniping, the Prime Minister insisted that nations had to "work together". Mr Johnson had been accused by France's interior minister Gerald Darmanin of making a mockery of UK-French relations and told he must "take responsibility" for the migrant crisis.

       The row began after Mr Johnson put a letter to French President Emmanuel Macron on Twitter with solutions to the boat crossings after 27 people drowned in the Channel last Wednesday.

       The PM's official spokesman said: "The Channel crossings are a matter where the UK needs to work closely with France and indeed the rest of Europe.

       "We know the movement of asylum seekers throughout Europe is a problem seen by a number of countries and we want to work together."
