Americans able to enjoy Royal Family through Prince Harry without 'historical baggage'

Lecturer at the University of British Columbia and Queen Victoria history expert Dr Sarika Bose spoke with Express.co.uk and believed American audiences could enjoy the Royal Family without diving into the muddied history the country has had with the Royal Family. Hard-line American Conservatives have positioned themselves as being opposed to the Royal Family as they hark back to the American Revolutionary War and continue to be wary of a constitutional monarchy interfering in US politics in any way. But Dr Bose believes Prince Harry and Meghan offer a half-way solution for Americans by providing the royal experience without the protocols and responsibilities that come with the monarchy.

Dr Bose added Americans could get behind Harry and Meghan because they represent celebrity rather than royalty which could bring up problems.

She explained: "There's a sort of glamour and a mystique from the Royal Family and having members of the Royal Family living can be a little bit of a lift for many people.

"And they do have a celebrity status there which perhaps works very well in that context.

"I keep thinking of the Duke and Duchess of Windsor a couple of generations before and they seem to have very similar status.

"That they were this glamorous couple that went to the best parties and so on.

"Now the upper classes in America are very much connected with the celebrity status."

Senior Fellow of the Bow Group Think Tank, Lee Cohen, warned however that American audiences could accept Prince Harry and Meghan but not when they waded into political debates.

Mr Cohen referred to Prince Harry's appearance on the Armchair Expert podcast where he branded the First Amendment "bonkers".

The Duke of Sussex told the podcast: “I’ve got so much I want to say about the First Amendment as I sort of understand it, but it is bonkers.

“I don’t want to start going down the First Amendment route because that’s a huge subject and one which I don’t understand because I’ve only been here a short time."

Mr Cohen agreed there were many who could back the Sussexes if they stayed out of politics, which is especially sensitive considering the Royal Family history with America, but their decisions to make comments on the US would turn people away from them.

The most recent YouGov US popularity poll published in February, before the Oprah Winfrey interview, put Harry and Meghan as the 4th and 5th most likely royals.

However, in the UK, the latest YouGov stats suggest Harry and Meghan are in the bottom three of most liked royals and join Prince Andrew who is at the bottom.

Prince Harry announced he is working on his memoirs and will publish a book in late-2022.

The book is believed to look at his life in the Royal Family and in the army which some royal pundits say will bring further agony to his relationship with his relatives.

YouGov revealed 25 percent of Americans say they are interested in reading the books but only 14 percent of Brits say the same.
