Heartbroken pals pay tribute to schoolboy, 9, killed in hit and run crash as he walked home with dad

       DEVASTATED pals of a nine-year-old schoolboy who was killed by a hit and run driver as he walked home with his dad on a narrow country lane have paid tribute to him.

       George Lewis was with his dad Michael on Friday night following a do at the local cricket club in West Yorkshire when he was struck by a white van.

       The driver fled the scene but later turned himself in to the local police station.

       Floral tributes and stuffed toys have been left at the scene of the tragedy on Sutton Lane, near Keighley.

       One read: "To George I’m gonna really really miss you I really hope you won’t forget me I will always remember the brilliant times we had together.

       "You always use to make me wee my pants laughing especially on Fortnite you will always be one of my best friends Lots of love our Good Pall Woody xxx”

       Another said: "Sleep tight little angel. Thinking of the family."

       A 49-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

       Police are appealing for witnesses to the incident.

       West Yorkshire Police stated:”Officers were called shortly after 9.30pm on Friday to a report of a collision on Sutton Lane, Keighley, near the junction with Knott Lane.

       “Emergency services attended, including the Yorkshire Air Ambulance, despite medical treatment, a nine-year-old boy was pronounced deceased at the scene.

       “It was reported that a white van was in collision with the boy, and another pedestrian who suffered minor injuries, before making off from the scene.

       “A 49-year-old man later attended at a police station in North Yorkshire and has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. He remains in custody at this time.”

       Detective Sergeant Fiona Allan, of West Yorkshire Police’s Major Collision Enquiry Team, said: “A nine-year-old boy has tragically lost his life and our top priority is supporting his family and ensuring that a thorough investigation is carried out into the events that have led to his death.

       “This collision has happened right on the border of West Yorkshire and North Yorkshire and we are keen to speak to anyone who has witnessed this collision or who believes they may have seen the van involved immediately prior to or following this incident.”
