TOKYO -- Japan has won its first medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, with Funa Tonaki, 25, taking silver in the women's under-48 kg judo event held at Nippon Budokan on July 24, the second day of the games.

Tonaki fell to Distria Krasniqi of Kosovo, who claimed the gold medal.

It was Tonaki's first Olympic appearance. The last Japanese athlete to win gold in the event was Ryoko Tani, four games ago. It is the second consecutive tournament for Japan to win a medal in the event.

Tonaki is a native of Kanagawa Prefecture, south of Tokyo. At age 22, she emerged victorious in her division at the 2017 World Judo Championships in her first appearance at the event. At the 2018 and 2019 World Judo Championships, she came second. Tonaki is a graduate of Teikyo University.
