PETALING JAYA: Malaysia has been invited by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) to showcase its maritime sector, says Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong (pic).

The Transport Minister said in a Facebook post Tuesday (Oct 18) that the invite was extended when he visited the IMO in London.

"During our 90-minute dialogue, Lim (IMO secretary-general Kitack Lim) pointed out that Malaysia's government structure for maritime affairs and administration is an ideal composition to grow and assist the industry and seafarers.

"It should be heartening to know that Mr Lim has also invited Malaysia to give a presentation to the IMO's member states on our country's structure in this sector, comprising the Transport Ministry, the Marine Department of Malaysia, our maritime attaché office in London and the Maritime Institute of Malaysia.

"We also agreed that there is a need for greater collective representation for seafarers and ship crews worldwide as this industry is widespread.

"At the same time, we also agreed that we all must play a leadership role in helping other IMO member states develop their industries while fighting climate change under the Green Voyage 2050 goal to cut greenhouse gas emissions in half in 30 years," he said.
