As many of Europe’s top destinations welcome more and more tourists each year, they continue to lose less of their authentic charm and ancient traditions.
The likes of Santorini and Venice now swarm with tourist tat shops just outside their ports selling non-unique t-shirts and magnets you can just as easily buy online.
For those who wish to immerse themselves in a European culture that continues to thrive, you should head for the region of Maramures in northwest Romania.
While this area remains renowned among Romania’s residents, most foreign travellers have no idea Maramures, and its ancient villages, exist and are truly missing out on a hidden gem.
The village of Breb - one of four villages in Maramures - is a must-see destination, where time stands still and ancient traditions continue to thrive.

The picturesque village of Breb is renowned for its well-preserved traditional lifestyle and architecture. Often described as a neighbourhood frozen in time, it offers visitors a glimpse into rural Romania as it was centuries ago and a world away from the busy streets of Bucharest.
The village is characterised by its traditional wooden houses, intricately carved wooden gates and cobblestone streets. Walking through its quiet streets, you can see living examples of ancient customs and crafts, including basket-making and horse-drawn carriages.
During the winter, Breb’s women weave traditional carpets while men carve wooden objects.
Its wooden churches, such as the Church of the Holy Archangels, are notable for their unique architecture and historical significance. It is also common to see its people - who maintain a strong attachment to the orthodox Christian faith - going to church in traditional clothing including colourful hand-embroidered blouses and traditional headscarves.
Dotting its hillsides are Breb’s iconic haystacks. Taking on conical shapes, the haystacks are typically made of wooden poles and reed or straw. Each year during the harvests, villagers carefully collect and stack hay, a practice that is considered a community effort, and often involves the help of neighbours and family members.
Situated at the foot of the Gutai Mountains, Breb can be fully appreciated once its stunning natural landscapes have been toured. Visitors can enjoy hiking, mountain biking, and exploring the surrounding countryside.

Some are left in place all year round, becoming part of the village’s aesthetic. They can be seen in fields, beside wooden barns, or near farmhouses, contributing to the timeless, rustic charm of Breb.
The village's serene environment makes it an ideal retreat for those seeking peace away from the chaos of Europe’s tourist hotspots and a connection with nature.
To get the full authentic experience in Breb, the best time to visit is during traditional holidays such as Easter or St. Mary’s Day on August 15. During these times, the village comes alive with festive attire and age-old customs.
To get to Breb, fly from Luton Airport to Bucharest on a three-hour-20-minute flight and then take a minibus to Breb, which leave from cities including Sighetu Marma?iei (Sighet) and Baia Mare, which are both accessible via train from the capital.
The minibus might not go all the way down into the valley, so you might need to walk down to the village. In reality, this will only add to the escape into the ancient lifestyle and you will find yourself tracing the route of generations gone by.
