Klang chapter of Red Crescent Society in a pickle after bank account frozen

KLANG: The Klang chapter of the Red Crescent Society is in a jam and unable to carry out relief work because it does not have access to its funds.

Its president Datuk Song Kee Chai (pic) said this was because the organisation’s bank account has been frozen since June 3.

“We were not given any notice or queried about anything before our account was frozen on June 3.

“When we asked for something in black and white from the bank, they did not give us anything but kept on saying our account was being investigated," said Song, adding that there was slightly over RM70,000 in the account.

Song said the society has had the account in the same bank for about 50 years.

He added it was now difficult for the 65-year-old association to carry out its usual humanitarian activities, more so during the current trying times.

“We are in the dark as to why this was done and we want answers," said Song.

According to Song, donors are unable to bank in their contributions due to the current status of the bank account.

“We are receiving calls from our donors almost daily asking what has happened.

“It is really sad this has been done to us during the pandemic when there is so much we have to do for the local community," Song said.

He added that the society has since lodged a police report as well as made complaints to the Finance Ministry and Bank Negara.

South Klang OCPD Asst Comm Shamsul Amar Ramli confirmed that a report was lodged at his station. He added that it was referred to the Bandar Baru Klang police station, which comes under the jurisdiction of the North Klang district police headquarters.
