PUTRAJAYA: The Road Transport Department (JPJ) will provide free replacement of documents for those affected by the floods.

       This would include documents such as driving licence, road tax and vehicle ownership certificate, said Transport Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong.

       “The replacement will be free for the flood victims. They have to lodge a police report (for the lost documents). But they don’t have to rush. After they are done sorting out their affairs, we will give them a time period where they can come to the JPJ branches (to get it replaced),” he said after the inaugural Kuala Lumpur International Logistics and Transport (KiLAT) Excellence Awards ceremony yesterday.

       It’s the first awards ceremony for the Malaysian transport industry, jointly organised by the ministry and EPL Exhibition Sdn Bhd.

       Dr Wee said a mobile JPJ unit would be placed at the affected areas for convenience.

       He also said train services had recovered as the floods had receded, adding that bus routes would gradually resume in the next two to three days.

       He noted, too, that cargo congestion in Port Klang was gradually easing up.

       On a regular day, Dr Wee said Port Klang handled 35,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) a day.

       During the flood, he said only 9,970 TEUs were handled, which meant a shortfall of 70%.

       “It slowly increased to 11,000 and (on Monday), it was about 27,000 TEUs which is about 80% from normal.

       “So, this is an indication that the cargo movement is gradually recovering,” he said.

       Dr Wee said that even though Port Klang faced this issue, he was confident the port’s performance would not just break the record but also to create a new one.

       In his speech during the award ceremony, he noted that based on current projection, it is estimated that about 13.8 million TEUs container throughput would be recorded for year 2021 compared to last year’s record of 13.24 million TEUs for Port Klang.

       In conjunction with the KiLAT awards ceremony, Dr Wee together with the ministry secretary-general Datuk Isham Ishak launched a new and improved ministry directory as well as witnessed a memorandum of understanding signing ceremony between YTL Construction, Universiti Malaya and Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad.
