Sir Ed Davey is under pressure to take action against a Lib Dem member after relentless online trolling and abuse of a former Tory MP was exposed.
Wimbledon is high on the Lib Dems’ list of target seats because Sir Ed believes his candidate Paul Kohler can win there.

Outgoing Conservative MP for Wimbledon Stephen Hammond is not contesting the seat, with the Tories fielding two-time World Championship triathlete Danielle Dunfield-Prayero instead.
An investigation reported an anonymous social media account @HammondWatch, which regularly launches attacks on Mr Hammond but has been suspended for the election campaign, was being run by former Lib Dem council candidate and prominent activist Barry Smith.
The account on X, formerly Twitter, carries the bio: “Wimbledon's part-time MP is famous for telling voters he'll do one thing whilst doing the complete opposite. We're holding him to account.”

And now, Mr Hammond is calling for an official apology on the eve Brits head to the polls.
Posting a video on X, he said: “Four weeks ago the account ‘Hammond Watch’ was found to have been run by a leading local Liberal Democrat activist.
“I am used to the cut and thrust of politics. But I worry social media trolling like that puts many good people off entering politics.
“I am really disappointed and upset that the local Lib Dems have not apologised or thrown this man out of their party.”
He added: “So on Thursday when you go to vote just remember if you are voting Lib Dem locally you are voting for a party that supports online abuse.”

Mr Hammond previously told Byline Times: “Set up days after the 2019 General Election, I’ve often pondered who’s behind @HammondWatch, a page immediately followed by Paul Kohler which has consistently hounded and trolled me and been dedicated to making false accusations and slurs on my integrity.
“It is run by Barry Smith, a friend of Paul Kohler, partner of a Lib Dem Councillor, and a committed Lib Dem activist and former candidate.

“This is the ugly face of Wimbledon’s Liberal Democrats. I await an apology from Mr Smith, and confirmation he has been thrown out of the Lib Dem party.”
A Liberal Democrat spokesperson said: “This X account is not run by the LibDems. We note it makes clear it has been suspended for the campaign.
“From a run down NHS to the cost of living crisis of the Truss mini-budget, the people of Wimbledon have an opportunity to reject that Conservative chaos tomorrow.”
